Donald Trump has spent the last several days secretly trashing his own senior adviser Hope Hicks to any person who will listen. He’s idiotically decided that both the Rob Porter domestic abuse scandal and the John Kelly coverup are Hicks’ fault, which is not very unusual, as he often blames women for the wrongdoing of men. Here is the enlightening part: no matter how mad Trump is at Hicks, he’s still publicly kissing up to her – and it’s not hard to figure out why.
Even as major news outlets report that Trump has been privately insulting Hicks behind closed doors, he’s releasing a public statement saying that she’s “absolutely fantastic.” In case that wasn’t enthusiastic enough, Trump is adding on that “I could not ask for anything more. Hope is smart, very talented and respected by all.” Why is he doing this? Because Trump knows he can’t afford to alienate her – especially not right now.
Just recently, Trump’s former legal spokesman Mark Corallo pointed the finger at Hicks of conspiring with Trump to suppress the email evidence that Donald Trump Jr is working with the Russians to help influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. This would hang Hicks on the legal hook for the crime of felony obstruction of justice. She now has to make a decision as to whether to make a deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, or to risk being imprisoned to protect Donald Trump.
Trashing Hope Hicks behind the scenes to her colleagues might just make her march into Robert Mueller’s office and cut a deal right now. Donald Trump, or perhaps his handlers, have figured out a bit too late that his attacks on Hicks were a bad idea. No wonder Trump is now praising Hicks as if she’s the best thing that ever happened. He desperately needs her to not cut that plea deal.
