Over the past two weeks, several important Republicans in Congress have suddenly and dishonestly started criticizing Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Not all Republicans in Congress are playing along, but there are enough of them that it’s clearly some kind of coordinated attack. It’s also felt like a desperate maneuver. Now we’re getting an explanation of why they’re freaking out: Mueller has been targeting the Republican National Committee for its part in the Trump-Russia scandal.
It’s long been known that Mueller is investigating Cambridge Analytica, the voter data analysis firm for the Donald Trump campaign. Cambridge Analytica somehow knew exactly which swing state voters to target on Facebook, despite having never publicly shown that it has anything close to the kind of skills needed to have pulled that off. Was the company just uniquely and improbably skilled at targeting, or was it working with the voter data that expert Russian hackers stole from those swing states? That’s for Mueller to find out. But now it turns out he’s going after the RNC for its connections to Cambridge Analytica.
Respected investigative reporter Michael Isikoff is reporting for Yahoo News that Mueller has been investigating Republican National Committee staffers to try to determine the links between the RNC, the Trump campaign, Cambridge Analytica, and the work of Russian hackers. It’s been reported that Mueller was specifically targeting Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher for his part in the Trump-Russia scandal, but this is the first confirmation that Mueller is investigating the corruption of the Republican Party as a whole.
This would seem to explain why some Republicans in Congress are suddenly going to ridiculous lengths to try to smear Robert Mueller and preemptively discredit whatever he may find. Some of the biggest culprits, such as Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy, were on the Trump transition team. Michael Flynn kept the transition team in the loop about his illegal cooperation with Russia. If so, those two Congressmen are guilty of felonies. No wonder they’re so afraid.
