This is the week you’ve been waiting for. Donald Trump’s downfall was always going to come from his own top people being forced to betray him in order to save themselves. If you’ve been looking forward to Special Counsel Robert Mueller starting to set those people’s lives on fire to see how they react, it happens this week. Mueller is about to rip Trump’s White House apart in order to get at him.
Mueller’s “interviews” with Trump’s top White House staffers will begin later this week, according to a new CNN report . We write the word “interviews” in quotes because that’s mostly just a euphemism for what these folks will truly be subjected to. If they tell any lies to try to protect themselves or Trump, that is a serious crime. If they refuse to be forthcoming, that’s obstruction, also a crime. And that’s when the fun really starts – just not for them.
Trump’s former campaign chair Paul Manafort, a hardened man whose entire professional life’s been a series of serious alleged crimes, is still working on deciding whether he wants to betray Trump or stubbornly die in prison. But now Mueller is going for softer targets. Does anyone think that people like Sean Spicer and Reince Priebus are willing to go to prison? So they’ll tell the truth in one way or another. But it’s not just that they will give Trump up. It’s how they’ll rapidly come to view each other.
Earlier this month there were already scattered reports that some of Trump’s White House senior advisers were coming to work each day in fear that their co-workers may be wearing a wire for Robert Mueller. Once these interviews start, they’ll trust each other even less. Paranoia will be the only rule. Mueller will have destroyed Trump’s White House simply by “interviewing” these people. The chaos will be quite the spectacle, and the collapse will be underway.
