When Helen Beristain heard Trump promise that he would only deport the “bad” immigrants, she never believed for a second that her husband Roberto would be one of ‘them’.
Roberto, Helen’s husband, is the dad of 3 American-born children, owner of a restaurant called Eddie’s Steak Shed, a very successful restaurant in Granger, Indiana, and a beloved part of the local community, is on the verge of being deported despite all that the family has done to prevent that.
Helen actually cast her vote last November because she thought his immigration policy would keep her and her family safe. “I understand when you’re a criminal, and you do bad things, you shouldn’t be in the country,” Helen told CBS TV affiliate WSBT. “But when you’re a good citizen, and you support, and you help, and you pay taxes, and you give jobs to people, you should be able to stay.”
Jason Flora, one of the 10 lawyers Helen’s family has had to hire, said that “If you asked 100 people to paint you a picture of a bad guy, no one would draw anyone remotely resembling Roberto.”
Despite all this, there is some hope, however. Roberto’s attorneys have found a discrepancy in the 17-year-old documents that said Roberto must leave the country voluntarily. As of now, Roberto is being sent from one ICE facility to another, which constantly varies the jurisdictions for the family’s legal team’s motion, and makes it very hard to get the case in front of a judge.
When asked about voting for Trump, Helen still stands up for her choice, but says “I wish I didn’t vote at all,” Helen Beristain said to the Tribune. “I did it for the economy. We needed a change.”
