CNN anchor Don Lemon said on Monday night that you can not compare a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who tried to kill several Republican lawmakers in 2017 to the deranged “right-winger” responsible for the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre and the Trump-loving “right-winger” who sent bombs to CNN and Democrats.
Lemon added in a panel discussion during his primetime program that he does not “see Democrats killing people.”
That debate began after the CNN political commentator Mark Shields claimed that assigning blame to anybody but the shooter during the Saturday massacre which happened in in Pittsburgh is both “outrageous” and “disgusting.”
Don Lemon disagreed, stating that the Sanders supporter who injured four Republicans including the Republican House Whip Steve Scalise during a congressional baseball practice cannot be compared to the synagogue shooter or the man from Florida who who sent several pipe bombs to Democrats and CNN. “Bernie Sanders is not the president of the United States,” explained Lemon.
“This is not equal,” Don Lemon said to Shields. “The right-wing group killed a woman in Charlottesville. This guy is a right-winger who killed the people in the synagogue. The right-winger sent bombs to CNN and to Democrats.”
“I don’t see Democrats killing people because of political, yeah —- maybe Democratic operatives who are out there.”
“But they tried to,” Mark Shields replied, failing to understand that conservative terrorists like the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter and Charleston church shooter have successfully killed dozens of people in recent years.
“Okay, they tried to, and that’s not right,” Don Lemon replied. “But for the most part, what do you see here, Mike? You see these extreme right-wingers and then instead of denouncing them and saying it’s just wrong, you make people think that it’s okay, that you’re making an excuse for, because then you go, ‘But what about the Democrats?’ when is no comparison. There is no equivalence there!”
Mark Shields insisted he wasn’t excusing anything and was making a point around the rhetoric from both sides leading to the rising political tensions in America. However, there has never been anything so directly caused by the Democrats as the mail bomber, Cesar Sayoc, was by a Republican. Donald Trump viciously insulted his critics and CNN, then bombs were sent to them by a supporter of his. From that, it’s easy to see that the right’s rhetoric is far more violent and angry.
