The Fresno Bee on Sunday officially endorsed Democrat Andrew Janz above Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) for the election held in California’s 22nd Congressional District in November.
“Voters in the 22nd District … can elect a representative who will both help them with their needs, listen to their concerns and invite them into the process, and chart a bipartisan course that the nation must find if it is to meet the challenges of the future. That leader is Andrew Janz,” wrote the paper’s editorial board.
“Voters can also choose Nunes and remain stuck with the damaging partisanship he practices, the party-above-country mode that motivates him to protect President Trump from the investigation into Russian meddling more than meet his constitutional obligations as an independent arm of government,” said the editorial. “Then there is his lack of regard for the needs of his part of California.”
The Fresno Bee, a prominent news outlets within the district, credited Andrew Janz for his views about addressing illegal immigration, passing gun control without stopping law-abiding citizens from arming themselves, and standing up for health-care access for Americans with pre-existing conditions.
The Bee noted that it invited Nunes twice to speak with their editorial board before declaring an endorsement, and the dishonest congressman did not reply either time. The Bee’s editorial board suggested that showed Nunes’s lack of accountability to the voters in his district.
Andrew Janz has risen in prestige in recent months due to millions of dollars worth of big fundraising hauls in his noble challenge against Nunes.
Nunes has carved out a national name for himself as one of Donald Trump’s staunchest lying cronies. Nunes was prominent in efforts by conservative lawmakers to reveal imaginary bias against the president in the Justice Department and the FBI.
While The Bee noted that this year is the first time in over 15 years that it is endorsing anyone but Nunes, the paper and Devin Nunes have traded criticisms in recent months.
The Bee;s editorial board pointed out earlier this year that Nunes is Trump’s “stooge,” and appropriately criticized him for leading the GOP attacks against the FBI.
