Donald Trump spoke during the United Nations Security Council meeting held last week, and while he was reading from a prepared speech, the American president made a dishonest and provocative accusation against China which was highly misleading.
“China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election – coming up in November – against my administration,” Donald Trump alleged without any evidence, adding, “We don’t want to them to meddle or interfere in our upcoming election.”
Yesterday morning, corrupt Vice President Mike Pence gave a speech falsely claiming that Trump was right, lying that China has “initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections.”
From that speech:
“China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections. […]
“When it comes to influencing the midterms, you need only look at Beijing’s tariffs in response to ours. They specifically targeted industries and states that would play an important role in the 2018 election. By one estimate, more than 80% of U.S. counties targeted by China voted for President Trump in 2016; now China wants to turn these voters against our administration.”
Mike Pence said an unnamed and probably made-up “member of our intelligence community” told him recently, “What the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what the China is doing across this country.”
But Russia’s attack on our elections was an expensive espionage operation that was launched by the intelligence agencies of a foreign adversary. That election rigging was a sophisticated and covert attack.
To claim this “pales in comparison” to China’s actions is silly. What the lying Vice President – and to a lesser extent, Donald Trump – has described is really something much less serious: the White House wants to rick people into believing that China’s retaliatory trade tariffs are election “interference” simply because many of the voters that are affected negatively by the policy are Republicans. This completely ignores the fact that Trump started the trade war and he is responsible for hurting his base with his idiotic and reckless actions.
Russia attacked America in order to put Donald Trump and Mike Pence in power, and although that’s the subject of a massive ongoing investigation, the manipulative and dishonest White House sees value in lying to Americans that, actually, the real scandal is a totally different country that is attacking the United States just because it opposes Trump (and rightfully so).
TPM’s Josh Marshall explained that “it is crystal clear that the White House is trying to delegitimize the on-going Mueller probe by setting up China is the real meddler in US internal affairs and democratic practice.”
Don’t be surprised if, during the coming weeks and months, a standard Republican line (lie) arises that Russia’s election assault was a minor mishap in the distant past, while China’s “meddling,” which isn’t real, is the scandal which deserves attention.
