With less than fifty days until the November midterm elections, many Republicans appear more desperate than ever to keep their seats in Congress. Texas Senator Ted Cruz is one of them, and had originally been predicted to easily win his reelection race against his much lesser-known Democratic rival, Beto O’Rourke. However, polling in the race is now so close that the wealthy National Republican Senatorial Committee is considering sending more campaign money to Ted Cruz, with an NRSC representative explaining “they were re-evaluating the resources they were going to put into Texas.”
Cruz is so desperate to get more campaign donations that he likely broke the law with a recent scam. Ted Cruz’s campaign sent out several hundreds thousand mailers requesting donations, however, he disguised the letters as legal summons. With so many of these fraudulent money requests going to elderly citizens, many Americans believe this stunt was a reprehensible attempt to fool senior citizens and make them think they were required to give money to Ted Cruz’s campaign. One Texas resident thinks many elderly individuals might be taken advantage of via this fraudulent plan, saying, “My grandmother suffered from some dementia, and could easily have followed the urgent request inside to send money.”
This disgusting illegal scam was criticized by Gene Wu, a Democratic Texas state legislator, who was a primary sponsor of Texas House Bill 1265 which in 2015 updated the crucial Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act in order to prevent citizens from being tricked into such situations. Wu knows that Cruz’s actions violate the bill, which was passed unanimously in both of the Texas houses. “As a member of the government myself, I realize that there’s already enough public distrust of us,” Gene Wu stated. “Every time someone sends out a piece of mail pretending to be part of the government it diminishes people’s views of us and makes it harder to govern.”
This isn’t the first time Ted Cruz’s desperate antics to strengthen his campaign or slander O’Rourke have backfired. In some recent attack ads, Ted Cruz blatantly lied, claiming O’Rourke wants to legalize heroin, which is ridiculous. Voters were not at all fooled by these lies, and many Americans donated to O’Rourke’s campaign as a response, resulting in over a million dollars in additional campaign cash. With the race this close, it seems that every move Ted Cruz makes is causes the election of Beto O’Rourke to be that much more realistic.
