Senate Democrats Just Got a Hypocritical Lecture from Mike Pence

Vice President Mike Pence has been watching the Senate prepare to review Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for Supreme Court, and he wants everybody to know he is disappointed by those rascal Democrats and their supposedly disrespectful behavior.

Vice President Mike Pence blamed a lack of progress on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court in the Senate on Democrats, tweeting that in a more “respectful time” Kavanaugh would already be on the court.

Said Pence: “Justice Antonin Scalia was confirmed 98-0 and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg received support of 96 Senators. If we lived in a more respectful time, Judge Brett Kavanaugh would be overwhelmingly confirmed by the United States Senate.”

Of course, Mike Pence is a liar and a hypocrite. Two years ago Barack Obama nominated a very compromising pick for the Supreme Court – Judge Merrick Garland, who had been recommended by a conservative Senate Republican – who, during a more respectful time, would definitely have been confirmed by the Senate.

But he wasn’t. Garland was instead subjected to a completely unprecedented partisan blockade, which was organized by Mike Pence’s amoral party, and it denied the moderate jurist any confirmation hearings, any committee consideration, or even an up-or-down vote.

If Mike Pence was concerned about all qualified Supreme Court nominees getting treated with “respect,” he certainly kept those opinions to himself in 2016.

Similarly, right before Election Day 2016, many Senate Republicans announced that they were ready to block any of Hillary Clinton’s nominees to the Supreme Court, regardless of their merit, if she won the presidency.

Talking about the Scalia vacancy, Burr said in late October of 2016, “If Hillary becomes president, I’m going to do everything I can do to make sure that four years from now, we’re still going to have an opening on the Supreme Court.” McCain added around the time, “I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up. I promise you.”

Mike Pence didn’t complain back then about the lack of “respect” towards qualified Supreme Court nominees.

I wonder why.
