Vice President Mike Pence, a man who already has a very unfortunate rhetorical record relating to the Russian scandal, talked with Andrea Mitchell on NBC News yesterday and went further with some of his devious thoughts about the probe.
“In the interests of the country, I think it’s time to wrap it up.” Pence said of the investigation. The Indiana Republican lied that the Trump administration “fully cooperated” with the election rigging investigation, adding, possibly due to fear of his crimes being exposed, “I would very respectfully encourage the special counsel and his team to bring their work to completion.”
Not only has their White House failed to cooperate fully– Donald Trump has refused to answer Robert Mueller’s questions – but the sinister suggestion that it’s already time to “wrap up” the probe is based only on the calendar, like a year-long probe about a scandal of such massive significance is somehow too long.
In fact, the Republicans’ own years-long investigation about Benghazi conspiracy theories was one of the longest in American history, and for congressional scrutiny of individual events – like Pearl Harbor, 9/11, Watergate, the Kennedy Assassination, and so forth– the Benghazi conspiracy investigation was actually the longest ever. Mike Pence doesn’t care about truth, of course.
But part of Pence’s appeal is the lie that the investigation isn’t accomplishing enough, so it should just be over. In a recent NPR interview, John Kelly, the White House Chief of Staff, was much more explicit about it. Asked whether he thinks the Russia probe is a “witch hunt,” like the manipulative president calls it, Kelly stated:
“Something that has gone on this long without any real meat on the bone, it suggests to me that there is nothing there, relative to our president.”
Maybe John Kelly isn’t paying enough attention to the news and current events.
As for “real meat on the bone,” so far the Mueller investigation has resulted in criminal charges for almost two-dozen people. Five of them have made guilty pleas already. One is already locked up in prison.
Meanwhile, the amoral president himself is the primary target of a criminal investigation. The dishonest president’s ex-campaign chairman is up against multiple felony counts. Trump’s ex-White House national security advisor already pled guilty to the crime of lying to the FBI regarding his communications with Russia.
And we recently found out the president’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, used a fake company to enter into highly controversial contracts with giant corporations, and the business arrangements are drawing the special counsel’s attention.
John Kelly, Mike Pence, and all the other Republican goons involved know that the investigation is heading towards criminal charges for them. That’s why they want it to end. They don’t care about justice, or what’s best for America. They only care about themselves.
